Quilt Block Club 2025 will gather every third Saturday at Ideaworks, a space buzzing with creativity.

Our focus for the year is "Disappearing Blocks", a technique that allows you to rearrange simple patchwork blocks into complex designs that look more difficult than they really are! This technique makes it easier to play with the colors and prints that make your pieces uniquely yours.

By December you'll have a collection of blocks that you can use to make a quilt, throw pillow covers, individual framed art, appliques on jacket backs or dish towels... the choice is yours! The aim is to instill the confidence to keep experimenting and creating beyond our meetings.

Unable to commit to the whole series? Email janelleo@fresnoideaworks.org about joining in an individual session. Walk-ins should be sewists with a little bit of experience and confidence. The price per individual session is $12.00.

    Important Stuff:

    • All materials are provided, but if you have specific quilting fabrics you'd love to work with, bring them along!
    • Quilt Block Club is suitable for anyone familiar with simple straight stitching on a domestic sewing machine. It's a welcoming space for both beginners and seasoned quilters.
    • For our younger participants, minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for a shared creative experience.

    Safety First:

    • We're serious about safety. Closed-toed shoes are a must in all areas of the facility.
    • Avoid dangling jewelry, lanyards, and the like around machinery.
    • Keep hoodie and apron ties, long hair, and long beards securely away from the machines.
    • Dates are subject to change. We'll do our best to ensure that everyone has a chance to make every block.

Get ready to stitch, share, and create lasting memories with fellow quilting enthusiasts. Quilt Block Club 2025 is not just about crafting beautiful pieces; it's about embracing the joy of quilting in a welcoming and inspiring community. See you on the third Saturday!

Beginning Welding is a 3-session course; each session is 3 hours. Students will gain a core understanding of how to operate welding equipment safely and get familiar with basic techniques.  This class is for hobbyists, makers, artists, or anyone wanting to try something new and challenge themselves a bit in a comfortable collaborative environment.

Check the class times shown to ensure you can make it to every session.

    What Not to Wear:

    • Do not wear rings or other jewelry.

This  weekend bootcamp version of our popular woodshop class is designed to get you up and running in the woodshop sooner, following the same curriculum as the regular 3 week classes. The additional introduction of a complex glue-up will result in a unique cheeseboard of your own creation.

Beginning Woodshop runs for 3 sessions of 4 hours each, and assumes no previous woodworking experience.  The goal is to train students in the basic use and safety aspects of the major tools in the woodshop.

Students should plan to attend all three classes.
The first meeting will cover  basic safety and project overview.  This meeting is mandatory. The second and third sessions will be devoted to a project that will require practice on a variety of tools and machines, as well as some layout and marking skills, to build a small serving board that you will be able to take home and be proud of!

      What Not to Wear:

      • Do not wear any dangling jewelry or lanyards that can get caught in machinery.
      • Do not wear clothing with loose sleeves or draped or dangling elements that can get caught in machinery.
      • No open toe shoes (anywhere in the facility).
      • Long hair and beards should be securely tied back.
      • Currently face masks are recommended but not required the facility.

      We will provide:

      • Eye protection
      • Ear plugs if requested
      • Materials for class projects

Upon completion of the class, Ideaworks members may be certified to use the covered woodshop tools unsupervised during business hours with instructor's approval.

You've been asking for it, so here it is!

This short course is designed around a popular hardwood cutting board project. From selecting your wood to measuring, marking, cutting, gluing, sanding and surface protection, Rachel will guide you through this gateway experience to designing more complex and artistic creations.

All materials for the class project are included, including a selection of domestic and imported hardwoods for you to choose from.

**Please note that, because of the limited variety of tools and machines used for this project, participants in the cutting board workshop do not qualify for a one-month conditional membership. For the same reason, this workshop is not a substitute for the beginner/refresher/safety woodshop class, necessary for approval to work unsupervised in the woodshop.

      What Not to Wear:

      • Do not wear any dangling jewelry or lanyards that can get caught in machinery.

    Our Mission and Vision

Ideaworks is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, public benefit organization.

The purpose of this corporation is to promote and encourage technical, scientific, and artistic skills through individual projects, social collaboration, and education”.  Fresno Ideaworks is a volunteer-operated, member-driven community workshop with the vision of being the inspiration hub for creative people of the Central Valley. Our makerspace facilitates skill development and innovation through hands-on teaching, collaboration, and educational resources, empowering our community with practical, artistic, and entrepreneurial skills. We are the first and most comprehensive non-profit, collaborative makerspace in the Central Valley. We are committed to maintaining and improving our facility in the Cultural Arts District of downtown Fresno, where folks from all Fresno neighborhoods can find us and participate in their own personal creative growth, and in the growth of the maker movement in Fresno.

    Our Makerspace

Fresno's Maker community makes it's home at 1730 H Street in downtown Fresno, California, in the historic "Crown Plunge" building. Built in 1928 by Clyde and Lloyd Jackson and managed by Reg Dauner, the Crown Plunge was the longest-operating swimming pool in Fresno when it closed in 1847. After removing the tank and installing their printing and engraving business, the Crown Plunge building remained in the Jackson family until 2018, when Fresno Ideaworks agreed to purchase it and create a permanent home for Fresno Ideaworks. Since then we have worked diligently to maintain our comprehensive woodshop, "weldatorium", machine shop, tech classroom & hackerspace, ceramics studio, textiles & fiber arts studio, modern fabrications lab. The recent addition of a lampwork glass art station is only the first step toward creating new hand-craft and fine arts opportunities to round out our established industrial arts programs.

    LEARN

Ideaworks offers many opportunities to develop artistic and technical skills. What sets our community workshop apart is the accessibility to the collaborative knowledge of the diversity within our inclusive makerspace.

    CREATE

Ideaworks' comprehensive array of tools and equipment enables makers to bring their ideas into reality. Our community workshop empowers individuals by providing skills and inspiration. At Ideaworks creativity is not a competition.

    SHARE

Ideaworks is the hub of our community of makers, innovators, and entrepreneurs. We love sharing ideas, projects, passions, and our craft.  Join us and get inspired to MAKE!

Fresno Ideaworks is funded in part by the City of Fresno Measure P Expanded Access to Arts and Culture Fund administered by the Fresno Arts Council, and by generous support from the Dyer Family Foundation, The Hilltop Foundation, and the many unwavering friends who believe in the maker movement.
