3D Printing and Design

In this fun and informative class students will

  • use CAD (Sketchup) software to design a 3-Dimensional model
  • transfer art files to the 3D Printer
  • learn about the various components of the 3D printer
  • practice cleaning up a finished model
  • understand proper maintenance documentation.

The class will finish with examples of troubleshooting problematic prints, supports, and a cursory introduction to painting the 3D model. 

  • This class is appropriate for students 14 and older. All minors must have a parent or guardian in the facility at all times.
  • Participants must have the ability to pay attention and focus for the entire length of the class session.
  • Any disruptive people will be asked to leave.
  • Experience of computer operation and drawing programs recommended.
  • Laptops will be provided, but you are encouraged to bring your own.

Upon completion of the class and additional projects, Ideaworks members may be certified to use the Ideaworks 3D printers unsupervised during business hours with instructor's approval. Note that 3D printers may become a pay-per-use tool.

Non-members will have a limited time to use the laser to complete class projects, but unlimited time using the Lightburn design software.

What Not to Wear:

  • Do not wear any dangling jewelry or lanyards that can get caught in machinery. 
  • Do not wear clothing with loose sleeves or draped or dangling elements that can get caught in machinery
  • No open toe shoes (anywhere in the facility)
  • Long hair and beards should be securely tied back.
  • Currently face masks are not required in the facility.
